St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands – December 10, 2024 – The incoming members of the 36th Legislature are pleased to announce the proposed officers and chairpersons for the body’s various committees, marking a significant step toward advancing the territory’s legislative agenda. In line with the Legislature’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and effective governance, the proposed officers and committee leaders will oversee the critical work of shaping policy, drafting legislation, and ensuring the wellbeing of the people of the U.S. Virgin Islands. As the incoming President, Senator Milton Potter expressed his enthusiasm for this new chapter at the Legislature.
“It is with great pride that I announce this dedicated team of leaders who are not only committed to serving our community but are also equipped with the vision and experience necessary to address the challenges we face,” he said. “Together we will work tirelessly to ensure that the voices of our constituents are heard and that our territory thrives.”
Incoming Vice President Kenneth L. Gittens emphasized the importance of unity and collaboration.
“Our leadership team represents a blend of diverse perspectives and strengths,” Senator Gittens noted. “We are committed to working together to create effective policies that reflect the values and needs of our people. We are ready to hit the ground running!”
Senator Elect Avery L. Lewis, who is slated to serve as Secretary, added that he was honored to take on this role and support the legislative body in its important work. “We will ensure transparency and accountability as we strive to improve the quality of life for all Virgin Islanders,” he said.
Incoming Majority Leader Kurt Vialet remarked on the importance of ensuring the timely spending of federal funds to support the territory’s rebuilding efforts. “As we embark on a brand-new legislature, our focus will also be on WAPA reform, economic development, education, healthcare, and more. We believe in a future where every Virgin Islander has the opportunity to succeed, and we will dedicate ourselves to making that vision a reality,” Senator Vialet said.
The team of Senators in the 36th Legislature pledges to be transformative for the U.S. Virgin Islands and committed to fostering a government that is responsive, inclusive, and proactive in addressing the needs of its citizens.
The public is invited to tune in to the 36th Legislature’s swearing in ceremonies and Inaugural Legislative Session on Monday, January 13th, 2025. The ceremony will be carried live on LEGIT TV (Channel 26) and also available to stream on legvi.org.
