Senate President Francis Statement on the Passing of Judge Eileen R. Petersen

Published: Apr 25, 2023

Senator Novelle E. Francis, Jr., President of the 35th Legislature released the following statement today following the passing of the Honorable Eileen R. Petersen:

“I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of the Honorable Eileen R. Petersen. I was fortunate to know Judge Petersen throughout my life, from when I first met her as a teenager delivering newspapers to the Toro Building in Christiansted to our multiple interactions during my years in the Virgin Islands Police Department and since.”

“Judge Petersen was a trailblazer. As the first woman judge in the territory, she paved the way, but held the door open for other women in the legal profession and in various areas of the judiciary. As the first Chairperson of the Virgin Islands Casino Control Commission, she was unafraid to blaze new paths, while still remaining true to her roots as a lawyer. She was someone to be admired and respected for her strength of character, work ethic and integrity.”

“I was so inspired by Judge Petersen’s legacy of service to the people of this territory that I sponsored Act 8132 to name the Virgin Islands Casino Control Commission building in her honor. This building will stand as a testament of her exceptional record of public service and leadership. It is my hope that all who see Judge Petersen’s name gracing the Casino Control Commission building are similarly inspired to learn more of her legacy and place in Virgin Islands history”.

“I am honored to have known Judge Petersen and on behalf of the members of the 35th Legislature, I extend my deepest condolences to her family and friends.”
