VIRGIN ISLANDS LEGISLATURE MOURNS THE LOSS OF ATHNEIL “ADDIE†OTTLEY
Published: Feb 11, 2022

ST. THOMAS- Senate President Donna Frett-Gregory and the Members of the 34th Legislature of the Virgin Islands join the community in mourning the passing of Veteran broadcaster Dr. Athneil “Addie†Ottley who died on Thursday, February 10, 2022. “We are saddened by this news, the loss of this iconic native son,†said Senate President Frett-Gregory. Ottley served in the 9th, 10th, and 13th Legislatures, and as Lieutenant Governor with the Honorable Governor Melvin H. Evans, the first elected Governor of the U.S. Virgin Islands.ÂÂ
For 50 years, he hosted “The Addie Ottley Morning Show†on his radio station, WSTA 1340 AM located on St. Thomas. Residents looked forward to this foremost morning broadcast and would call in and dialogue with the late radio host to voice their opinions and concerns on numerous topics affecting the Territory. Residents will also miss his calming voice which carried us through some of our darkest moments, especially during the natural disasters that have affected the Territory over the years. ÂÂ
Additionally, Ottley was a true statesman and public servant, serving on various boards, commissions, and civic organizations. His name, voice, and face were a staple during Carnival parades and numerous cultural community activities – a true cultural ambassador for the Virgin Islands would best describe Ottley. ÂÂ
His long-standing contributions will forever be ingrained into the hearts and minds of the people of the Virgin Islands, and he will be sorely missed, so on behalf of the 34th Legislature, we extend heartfelt condolences to the entire family and dear friends of Athneil “Addie†Ottley.   ÂÂ
