Kenneth L. Gittens, was born in Christiansted, St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands on June 3, 1971, to the late Doris L. (Williams) Joseph and Keith R. Gittens, Sr.

Kenny, as he’s affectionately known, is a product of the Virgin Islands public school system. Upon graduating from St. Croix Central High School, he joined the Virgin Islands Police Department in November of 1990. While working, he furthered his education at the University of the Virgin Islands, John Jay College of Criminal Justice, and Columbia Southern University – obtaining an Associate of Science in Police Science and Administration, Bachelor of Science, and Master of Science degrees.

Kenny has an immense interest and admiration for public service. In his more than two decades in the fields of law enforcement, criminal justice, and emergency management, he diligently served in various capacities within the VIPD. He also served as a Fraud/Internal Investigator with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security within the Federal Emergency Management Agency. He is also a volunteer Emergency Service Coordinator with the V.I. Territorial Emergency Management Agency.

Senator Gittens is a member of the V.I. Retired Police Organization, National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL), and Gentlemen of Jones, Inc. He has been involved with many community organizations, including the Cub Scouts of America, Boys Scouts of America, Law Enforcement Explorers, Police Benevolent Association, Law Enforcement Supervisors Union, Peace Officer Standard Training Council, St. Croix Festival Committee, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s CYFAR program to improve community-based programs for at-risk children and their families. He is an active and lifelong member of the Friedensberg Moravian Church.

Kenny has served in the 30th, 31st, 33rd, and 34th Legislatures of the Virgin Islands. His positions held include Senate President; and Chairman of the Committees on Homeland Security, Justice, and Public Safety; Rules & Judiciary; and Economic Development & Agriculture. He has served three terms as the Senate Liaison to the White House, as well as the Legislature’s representative to the V.I. State Council of the Interstate Compact for Juveniles.

As a member of the 35th Legislature of the Virgin Islands, Senator Gittens will remain ever-vigilant in his oversight and legislative efforts on behalf of the people.

He is the proud father of daughters, Shawntay and Shonneth, and grandfather to Zyan.
